Global Executive attributes - Essay Example He has risen to the top position by hard work. He has been successful as he has a clear vision of what it takes to make a company profitable. He is tough, a task master but at the same time he is quiet and warm. He has in him all the attributes of a global executive. Several attributes contribute to outstanding leadership of a global company. According to Chenault adaptability is one of the traits required to succeed in a rapidly changing environment of a global marketplace. In one of his lectures Chenault (2005) said â€Å"its not the strongest or the most intelligent who survive, but those most adaptive to change. Over the past 10 years, the need for, and focus on, adaptability has accelerated." He further added that it is absolutely necessary to understand different cultures and to have the ability to act quickly in changing circumstances. Apart from these attributes, it is absolutely essential that a global executive or leader acquire the following competencies and skills: foresight, communicativeness, a willingness to encourage colleagues and build effective teams, trustworthiness, dynamism, confidence, leadership qualities, toughness and courage. In addition, a global executive should be humble, modest and must be able to motivate a diverse team. Most importantly he must be able to change himself and also bring about a change in accordance with a given situation. It is needless to say that Chenault has most, if not all, of the attributes that are associated with a global executive. He has served his organization in a wide variety of positions, ranging from director of strategic planning in the Merchandise Services division to president of the Consumer Card division. He has been instrumental in building and restructuring the companys card business. He took on the challenge of streamlining divisions which were not doing well.
